Our story

Albrecht Sand & Gravel Co. was started in 1954 by William and Joan Albrecht, with just a single 5-yard dump truck, a bucket tractor, and a dream of a family business! They both worked at a local factory and ran the business on the side when they were just getting started. When they started in 1954 they had 3 little ones, Dave was 6, Karen was 4, and Bob was a baby! All the kids remembered riding along in the truck when Bill or Joan were making deliveries, taking naps on the bench seat of the truck.

Into the 70's, alongside the main focus of making and delivering aggregates to local contractors and homeowners they also did snow removal around the City of Sandusky in the winter, and hauled sugar beets for area farmers in the fall.
By the 1980's, Albrecht Sand & Gravel had expanded to include 4 trucks, a crusher, a wash plant, and a screening plant. At that time, Albrechts was also subcontracting for PTI Construction on drainage systems and roadway construction as well as shoulder graveling.
In December, 1989, Bill passed away. Four short years later, Joan passed as well. The 3 kids were still working together to keep the company going strong even through the loss of their parents.

In 1998, Dave and Bob thought they would like to expand so they bought PTI Construction and added asphalt paving to their list of provided services. Unfortunately, by the spring of 1999, Dave passed away so Bob was on his own to run the asphalt paving part of the company along with the original aggregate side as well. Thankfully, through his hard work, Albrecht Sand and Gravel became a trusted and dependable asphalt contractor - paving city, county, and state roads throughout Huron, Sanilac, and Tuscola counties.

In the fall of 2017, Bob had decided he'd had enough of the paving business so all the asphalt equipment and the asphalt plant got auctioned off.  We were back to just producing, selling, and delivering aggregates again. Shortly after that, Karen retired from running the office after almost 50 years. Bob's daughter Laura, having been around the business in one capacity or another since she was 13 years old, took over running the office, joining Bob's wife Mona who has been here for 30 years+. One of Bob's other two daughters, Lindsey, also currently works in the office.
In January, 2021 the company was dealt a crushing blow with the unexpected passing of Bob. Fortunately Bob's wife Mona has kept the company going with the help of family and our long time dedicated employees.

Bill and Joan's dream of a successful family business has definitely been realized; at one time or another, all three of Dave's children have worked here (Theresa, Tera, and Tom), Karen's husband Bob was a part time flagger, and all three of Bob's daughters (Laura, Lacey, and Lindsey) worked here. They even have their oldest great grandson, Riley, that has joined the business as an equipment operator.
We are sure that Bill and Joan would be proud of what their dream has become!
